It is a useless feature.

Strong disagree. I use mine all the time. If you just want to set one thing in the back, i.e. a single grocery sack or gym bag...if you are too close to another vehicle to open the whole hatch...if you have something that might roll out...if you have dogs back there...etc etc etc.

More SUVs should offer the function.

More SUVs should offer the function.

It's also handy in a tight garage to toss something in the back if you don't have space to open the full tailgate. It's also nice if you need to haul a long item that needs to hang out the back (long piece of lumber, etc). Much easier than trying to tie down the tailgate, etc.
