2003 4.6/5.4 engines had 16 valves, 2 per cylinder. In 2004 the F150 was first with 3 valves per cylinder, Expedition following in 2005. 2004 was the last year for the smaller 4.6 mill in our Expeditions.

Thank you. So mine has 16 valves. 2 per cylinder as you said. Makes looking up things easier.

Does the 4.6 have the same problem as the 5.4 with the chain tensioner or are they a different animal?

If it was a rattle that only lasts 3-10 seconds on cold start ups then I'm calling that as suspect #1

It was a rattle that later as long as it ran. Which it would only stay running for like 10 seconds

Habbibie, I was just reading about the same wear problems as the bigger brother 2 valver. The article stated its the usual suspects, dirty oil from neglect, and no drainback valve on the filter. This causes the plastic guides to wear down fast. That and the galling of one or more of the valve lash hydraulic adjusters, making them stick in their bores./Enigma, use a stethoscope or a long piece of 1/2 inch hose up to suspect valve cover. You need to isolate where exactly the noise is emanating from, as both are possibilities.

We will inspect. Weather is just starting to break here. Hopefully get a chance to start the break down process and find out what it is. I appreciate the help from you guys and if you come up with anything else, please let me know. Open to all suggestions.

Ok. It's been a while since I've updated. Been so busy. But we finally got around to messing with it. Seems it was the timing belt guide. I'm buying a whole timing kit thoughIMG_20181118_104505.jpg IMG_20181118_104512.jpg

Did you pull the passenger side timing chain off without securing the cam or removing roller followers? I may be wrong but this being an interference engine, your valves may have contacted your piston.

So in other words.... I'm going to probably need to take it to a mechanic and pay a good amount to have it all taken care of? I didn't think this was a interference motor. Was told it wasn't online.... Not here though. Mother.....
