I replaced the front disc pads 2K back. The rotors were in great shape. Lately I have a squeel comming from the front passenger side (off and on) and twice when it happened my abs dash light came on. When I start the xpy again the light goes out. I'm pretty sure it's not the pad sensor and was wondering if it might be the abs sensor instead. Like I said it only does it occasionally but would like to make it go away. I do live on a gravel road but am pretty sure it's not the ceramic brake pads. Any help would be appreciated.
TIA

It could be the one of the speed sensors, not sure which one though...

Does this happen when you step on the gas from a dead stop, and it feels that the suv is bogging down maybe three times, then the ABS or traction light comes on?

:)

I can assure you that it's not the pad sensor. (that's because there isn't one)

The abs sensor can get full of grease and crap, especially if the wheel bearing is on it's way out. You can remove it and try to clean it. I would also check to see if the wires and connectors are intact and not corroded.

If the wheel bearings are making noise, now would be a good time to replace them, since they come with new abs wheel speed sensors.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough, it only happens when I apply the brakes and mostly when I'm backing up. I'm pretty sure it isn't a wheel bearing.

I guess that I wasn't clear either. I blame the abs light on the speed sensor / wheel bearing issue.

The noise is probably something wrong with the pad itself.
Possibilities:
Pad is cracked or damaged
spring clips moved or damaged
pads weren't installed with anti-squeal gel on the back
Caliper bolts have loosened up.

Also you say that the rotors were in great shape. Were they machined when you had the new pads installed? Just doing a 'pad slap' without turning or replacing the rotors, is kind of asking for problems.
