17.8 is probably pretty good for a 5.4 with no mods. I'm told a chip will help with fuel mileage but you'll prob. have to run premium gas (more$$$$). As far as the ride-- these thing are sprung simular to the f150s so they have a little rougher ride. The 03's got independent rear suspension so they ride smoother than the 97 thru 02's do. Air pressure has some effect on ride, if you are running max pressure try airing them down a few pounds.

16.5 around town. 4.6 4x2 with 3:31 gears. A chip can help mileage but with the added power you tend to use it more and then your mileage will drop :D

My 2000 5.4 , 4x2 get 17.5 more or less on the highway and around town maybe ... maybe 12.0 mpg . But I noticed it was alot lower around the city in the Winter. Sumtimes as low as 7.4

Well I just returned from a vacation where we drove about 3,000 miles. The mileage performance of our X was less than stellar but wasn't horrible. We averaged about 75 mph on the hwy. The only mileage I'm really interested in at this point is hwy cruising. The best we got was 16.7. The worst leg of the trip was 14.6. No mountians. Drove from OK to FL and back. On our first road trip about 3 months ago we got 17, so this recent jog wasn't quite as good. Of course we had 3 extra people and all the gear.

My 99 4x4 with the 5.4 gets 12mpg all city driving and 14 half city and half interstate driving. I haven't taken it on a long road trip to see what the mpg is for all interstate driving.

Holy crap. I used to get that with my V10, 4x4 Excursion loaded with all 6 kids and vacation stuff.

Glad I don't worry about mileage anymore...

Yeah, I know the mpg sucks but I still love the truck. BTW- where do you live in Hawaii? I lived there a couple of times (father is retired air force). I lived there in grade school (lived in Aiea) back in 1980 and I went to Highschool and 1 year at UofH. I went to Lutheran High in 11th and 12 grade. We lived out in Makakilo (damn I don't think I can spell it anymore....). We left the islands in 1990. I went back for my 10 year reunion in 1999. Hasn't changed much except for H3. Still beautiful.

Actually I live on the Big Island. Kailua-Kona.

I used to live on Oahu (where you did) but cannot take that pace of life.
