Would someone tell me what this little piece is about. It was sitting on top of the schrader valve when I unscrewed the cap.

Schrader valve cap seal ... stuff it back in the cap.

Which way does it go? The size and diameter of the protruding dome is different on both sides.

I've never removed the cap on mine. I would think 1 side would fit properly over the Shrader valve and the other would not. The side that doesn't fit should go into the cap first and rest against the closed end. So long as the seal goes into the cap and covers the Shrader valve it probably doesn't matter.
