A couple weeks ago I decided to do the Gotts mod to my Expy.
Read all the threads I could find on it, bot here and the F-150 Forum. All looked pretty straight forward and easy, so I went for it! Found a length of 3" thin walled PVC pipe and whacked off about a 6" piece. When looking at the hole in the fender, I could tell the pipe was just baaaarely too big to fit. So the lightbulb turned on. HEAT GUN!!! Just warm it up and the pipe will just slide in the oblong shaped hole. But this turned out to be a baaaaaaad idea... Yes, the pipe when warmed up did slide into the hole, but the exposed pipe on the other side "mushroomed" and didn't come back out of the hole! *facepalm* Then it was time to get creative on how to get the pipe back out. That stuff really is stronger than it looks!
Finally got the pipe out if the hole and cut a second piece of pipe to replace the now destroyed first attempt. Went to the sander and sanded it down like the instructions said and voila! It fit!. But, when I went to connect the PVC pipe to my filter box, there was a huge difference in size between the PVC and the filter snout. The O.D. of the filter snout was 2.5" and the I.D. of the pipe was nearly 3". So an little redneck ingenuity with some hose clamps and a rubber sleeve got it together.
The next day at work (I sell industrial products) I looked through my Goodyear hose catalog and found a perfect sized hose! 2.5" I.D. with a 3" O.D. rated for full vacuum. Had my hose shop send me a 12" "sample" and TAH-DAH! The hose slipped onto the snout perfectly and fit the hole in the fender like a dream. Gotts mod Revision 2! Like a Boss!
Now that I knew the process, was time to do the mod to my sisters '99 F-150. I had enough hose left over for a second mod, so it should only take a few minutes, right? WRONG! The snout on the filter housing was BIGGER! My 2.5" I.D. hose could slide inside the filter snout! Grrrr.... Back to the PVC. The PVC pipe and the snout matched like they were cut from one another. The good news, I already had a sanded piece of pipe ready to go. Gotts mod #2 done. This time I got to be a sheep and follow the directions...
Lesson learned, not all filter housings are the same. I am now on the search for the larger one for my Expy...
