New here, thinking of buying and '01 Eddie Bauer. 98K on the clock 5.4L with the all time 4wd. The guy has said he runs it in the summer with the 4wd fuse pulled and gets nearly 20mpg. Is this something you guys do? Thanks ahead of time for the info\help.

i dont know about 20mpg... it could happen but I would predict probably 16-17 is more likely.... I can baby 12-13 out of mine during the summer... also removing the fuse will disable the AWD but the front end will still be spinning and causing resistance that will hurt MPG... best thing to do for MPG is baby the expy and some basic mods like cold air intake and free flowing exhaust..... and welcome to the forum...

and for more information on pulling the fuse it is very similar to the "brown wire mod"... try google for more info..

No way in hell is that possible.

I have a 2000 w/5.4L and A4WD...I've never seen better than 13 MPG...I usually average around 10 and I'm not one to drive fast either.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! I have done some more searching and found that the 20 mpg was a joke. But I'm pretty sure I'm still going to buy it. I checked out the "brown wire mod" and think that I will try that if/when I do get the truck. Thanks again!

either way even without the brown wire mod you can't go wrong with an expy... good luck on your next purchase

so, I took a good look at the expy yesterday. Looks like it is going to need a half shaft on the drivers side, which means the passenger side will be soon. how hard is this job one these trucks? I have done several on GM products and import cars, is it pretty much the same, or am I looking at some extra work?
