Homemade rear bumper

I wanted to do a roll pan style rear recovery bumper. I found this 3"x8"x69" 1/4 inch thick steel for cheap and decided it will work. My dad and I worked on it all day and cut it down to size. Drilled holes so i could use the stock bumper holes(offsetting 3 inches to account for body lift), drilled holes for the license plate, sanded, primer-ed and sprayed with flat black bed liner. We did a quick test fit and it looks like it will fit perfect. Tomorrow We are going to drill holes to mount license plate lights on to make it legal and sometime soon my friends dad is going to weld some mounts on so I can easily attach shackles for recovery points. All for under 100 bucks.... I am more than pleased. I will add pictures of it all completed and mounted tomorrow.

why do you not cap off the ends to smooth it out and stop any elements from getting in and causing rust..

Also, I would of notched the bumper mounting points to bring the bumper inward more so that it would not be sitting outward so much. Just an idea.

Another idea guy here. Add shackels for recovery points.

Something else to think about... I had a similar bumper on my Scout that actually doubled as an air tank. There was a fitting on one end that went to a mini compressor and another one at the other end with a quick release fitting for an air hose. That extra reservoir of air made the mini compressor much more usefull.

Im going to have a friend weld two mounts for shackles so I can use it for recovery. Also I think i will cap the sides and might put a strip of diamond plating on the top. I added some new pictures of it finished(for Now) and next to my moms miata.

Yea, I added a threaded bung at one end to drain any moisture that accumulated. They really should have thought about that from the beginning.

pics of that hi lift mount please! want to do that too. also another idea. weld on a receiver hitch. i know you will probably not need it. but just incase. also i would have cut off some of the frame. welded that shut then welded the bumper on. just a thought. looks good though.

Looks good, would def add some shackles, when you do i want to see the pics. but otherwise a great way to make a visual impact for cheap cost. was never a fan of the rear bumper on this model. Can you add a side profile pic would like to see how it sits, thanks.
