Inaccurate Fuel Gauge Readings

2002 Expedition Eddie Bauer - I recently purchased and was told that the fuel pump had been replaced. It was sitting at 1/4 tank reading. I stopped to fill it and it only went to 1/2 gauge reading with the computer saying 158 miles to empty. As I drive the gauge and the miles will lower. I have no idea how much fuel remains in the tank. When I top it off again it will still not go above 1/2 tank. Is there a key reset for the gauges?

Was just the pump replaced or was the whole assembly replaced.

There are ways to test the sending unit fuel gauge using resistors and an OHM meter

Are these newer expeditions like the vehicles of years back, where you could ground the pos lead for a moment, to see if gauge would go all the way to full. Or would damage occur to the computer and other items doing so? The other simple test we used to do was physically move float on sending unit and observe gauge. Sounds like our friend will have to drop tank to access the sending unit. Why do fuel pumps and sending units act up with a full tank! Oh the weight of all that fuel.

If you read the link I posted you will have information on how to test gthe sender and the fuel gauge

You will need to get under the air cleaner tube to get to the two connectors that I mention

Again those prints in the link are for a 2001 expy the wiring for your 2002 is exactly the same
