99 expedition EB, w/mach.

soon here I'm going to buy a thunderform, unloaded and unpowered.
I need help finding an awesome sub to use. it has to be 10'', have a mounting depth LESS than 5 1/8 inches (130mm) and it needs no more than .6 cubic ft. of sealed space.

I have found a couple name brands like audiobahn, mtx, kicker, they all make subs that fit, but outside those for the power handling, sound quality, price, loudness, etc. etc.

are there some subs you guys know about that are head and shoulders above the rest?

my budget is $150, not to exceed $200 (even lower is OK!!)

I have been shopping for the exact same thing, and I have come up with only one decent option so far. It is the Alpine Type S (new style) but a spacer would have to be used to get the sub to fit since the mounting depth is 5 7/8ths. I will just have a 3/4 or 1 inch MDF ring made and that will give me enough room to keep it from bottoming out on the enclosure.

I'd rather find a sub that fits within the specs that the box is made to. for me it's about sound for the buck, but only if the sound fits how I need it to fit. I do like Alpine type R's but the RMS wattage is just too low.

If I get something that requires a spacer then I run the risk of getting into all sorts of extra holes and sealing problems that I just don't want to deal with. I am continuing the search.

Also, Thank you for your service, Sir.

If you find something that looks good please let me know. I am looking to spend the same amount of money since this is just my beater.

I really think I might go with Audiobahn, the awc10, aw1000, or the alum10. the first one is a little on the cheaper side, the other two are pretty sweet. I need to call to make sure, but I think the thing over the the front of the latter 2 subs is what they're calling a grill. if that's the case and is removable, it is for sure going on the list.

I've had audiobahn in the past, the sounds are smooth and deep, takes a lot to distort or harm them, excellent frequency response (something like 20-500Hz), a mounting depth of 5 inches which is PERFECT, and I think they are a great deal for the money. $108 shipped to your doorstep. not bad.

that being said, I found out neither the aw1000 or the alum10 will work as both subs are 10 7/8'' wide and the box only allows a sub that's 10 3/8''....research research research.

Phoenix Gold R1.10D. Same sub i just installed in my rig. Depth is 5" even and it takes .4 to .8 of air space and needs between 200-400 for wattage. Let me know if you need one I have one brand new I am willing to let go for for less than what your looking to spend.

I love the way it sounds in the stealth box i built for the factory sub location.

kicker cvt is a good shallow mount sub. works really well in small boxes. but if you want most bang for your buck just get a single 12 like mine in a small hatchback box like mine. im super happy with mine. was going to upgrade till i redid the wiring and now even more pleased. haha but mine cost me with sub and box about $200. circuit city out of business sale but still. it shouldnt cost that much anyways for a single 12 sealed box and a good 12" sub.

I have two type R 15 in subs i know its bigger then what you want but there RMS is WAYYYYY underrated I have been running those 15s at 2500 rms and they say they take 750 a piece soo 1500 total. Plus when I ran a 12in type r before that it too 1000 no problem there power is pretty under rated been running type rs for 5 years now. Never blown on either

I'm really trying hard to find a sub, but it seems like all the subs that would fit in the Thunderform are all around 200-400watts rms.
I would like to find something with a little more power handling capabilities, say 600-800 watts. I don't know if that takes me out of the realm of shallow (in this case 5 1/8'') mount subs.
If it does, then I may just have to sacrifice the cubic foot of space and go with a VERY decent 12'' in a sealed box, then decide later wether replace the stock 8'' sub with an aftermarket one.

all that aside I still want a 10'' that will rock out loud, hard, clear, and still fit snugly in the thunderform box with no modification.

its only 300 rms (in my other car I got two 12" P3's @ 500, so thats low) but it still sounds good. I got the 2 ohm version, only because I already had a Kenwood 6104 and it went with it.

Remo: Thank you for the idea, however that perticular sub only requires half the space (ideally) that my box has. also @ 10 pounds It's pretty hefty for having average wattage handling. however that aside the specs put the SPL (sound pressure level for anyone who may not know) at a very decent and in-class 83.43dB and for $65 that is a VERY hard deal to beat. It would be great for the guys who want under-seat mounted subs because they are so thin and require a mere .35ft³ of sealed space to work at ideal pressure. incredible to say the least, just not right for my application. on the other hand, 2 of those would be perfect for for my wife's little escape and I have bookmarked the link. ;)

MrCaeser: as far as sealed 10's go, ( I've had a kicker comp cvt in a single sealed slim box hooked up to a pioneer mono block 400W amp.) how is it? is it good? is it outstanding? is the bass cleaner? deeper? is it really worth a $150? give me any and all details you got, I'm only making one decision on my system (headunit, sub, box) and I have to make sure everything is going to work in harmony. I'm going window shopping this Sunday. I'll have some better ideas by then I think.

For everyone else: here are the only 2 subs that caught my eye;

Alpine SWRT10
MTX TT-6510

only those two fit ALL my criteria... 10 inches, single and dual 2 and 4 ohm options, over 300 watts RMS, rated over 80db, mount depth of 5 inches, and has the proper response in Hz (20-500 ish) and Price. other subs fit my criteria better but were along the line of $400 a piece. YIKES!

I don't know if you have considered it or not but MB Quart offers a thin line of subs and I personally run a twelve from their line plus two sets of components. I have yet to run into a bad sub or speaker that they produce. Plus on ebay right now you can get some dirt cheap.

there are only two things that keep me from being interested in this sub. the Response range, and the over-all db sensitivity.

now I'm not saying that this sub isnt good, or for that matter Very Good given the price tag of $75. because it is, BUT it is those two factors which keep it from being a Great Speaker.

If this were a 2 door car, or a small truck application (like stated above) it would be at the top of the list. but the fact remains I have to make that sound travel from one corner of my Expedition to the opposite end corner. If a sub doesnt carry the ability to deal with Higher/lower Hz Levels it's going to be able to get that sound across the vehicle with the proper (note, tone, pitch, p.l. whatever you want to call it) it's going to result in distortion at higher listening levels, if all I have to do is shell out another $50 bucks eliminate that...I will.

Also I found a killer deal on sound deadener, I wish I wish I wish for warm weather.

the cvt would fit, the cvr is 1/4inch too deep to use in a flushbox. I really think I'm going to get a regular sealed box and a regular awesome 12 like the square MTX, or a jl audio. We'll see on Sunday.

I have an Audiobahn Alum10x lying around the house...
