Loud cracking sound when in 4wd

I thought this problem was in my transfer case, but since I've got a new one now, it's not that.

When driving in regular 2wd there are no unusual sounds, but when I engage the 4wd it clicks/cracks really loudly when turning both left and right. I noticed it when I was in the snow last Christmas and figured I'd deal with later. Well, it's later now and I'm trying to figure out what this is.

Here's what I now:

It's definitely in the front
When I turn the wheel in 4wd it seems to bind and even stops if I'm going slow enough.

Any advice is most welcome!

i would check your CV shafts. sounds like you need some new ones.
