I am just curious, how much difference in MPG's between a 4.6 2wd and a 5.4 4x4? Thanks.

Couldn't say from experience but I recall forum chatter that there is not significant fuel economy realized in the 4.6l engine. My '01 has the 4.6l and I do everything I can to keep it in the best possible running condition. Fuel consumption seems comparable to what I hear from the 5.4l guys. My guess is that conservative driving habits would have bigger impact than engine size in this instance.

Anyway, an Expedition is no vehicle to be considered if poor MPG is a deal breaker.

hell, it's underpowered in the 2wd as well. I've had cars with the same power and they still had to work pretty hard on some hills.

yes very true , but Ford has to meet the EPA guide lines for fuel eco so they make so many 4.6 2wd with a 3.31 gear

yep, that's what I've got in mine. it's a lsd too which surprised me. but I am kinda glad they did make them as I do get good mileage under mixed driving. 14.5 average so far.

My '98 will be coming out of storage soon. I will drive it 80 mile round trips, 4X a week, all highway interstate. After the initial tank of old Stabil treated gas burns out, I will clock a few fills and see if the 4.6 2WD on a steady 70mph cruise across open flat land can deliver upper teens highway MPG.

well, I wonder if a 480 mile trip from NE Ala to Jacksonville fla would yield those numbers? because that's what I'm doing tomorrow. Will post results when I fill up again. Mine is a 4.6 with new plugs wires etc and the 3.31 lsd and 4r70w.

Please do. I will be quite interested in your findings. BTW, how fast do you intend to cruise at?

eh, depends on traffic to be honest. When I took my buick on half of that trip I hit about 98 a few times (the expy will not get there as it takes WOT to even touch it)

so, mostly I'll match traffic but try to average 75-85 I don't think I have too much extra weight to really impact mileage but even better so I just gave away so much I dropped the need to rent a trailer.

the best fuel econ I have reported from her thus far is 16.4 on a trip to lithia springs Ga for the bumper/fenders and ac comp/hoses..

well according to the sticker on my 2002 E.B. expedition it gets 12 city and 16 highway, however i seem to average about 11 in town and I have yet to be on a road trip with the new truck. Thank god my other vehicle is an escort that gets about 35 mpg in town so when i get poor I can still go to work..

I got about 380 till 1/4 tank and the numbers ran to 19.5 mpg. Not bad if I say so myself.

Also. Made it safe to jax Florida: D

I got 17 flat last week on a 330 mile round trip from Atlanta to Augusta and back with the 5.4 and had a little over 1/4 left. I was shocked with the old plugs and coils and all. Got a thousand miler this week so we'll see how it does.

I saw a sticker on a 2012 Prius yesterday that said "Hillary for President in '16".

It didn't mean anything either

LOL....

Somewhere on there is something to the effect individual results may vary.

Alright, on my 97 expy 4.6 with the 4r70w I got 19.5 to jax and 18.7 on the way back up. averaged about 75 to 80mph for the most part and ac was only on briefly on both trips. I could've gotten it better if people didn't find it necessary to cut me off but I'm not complaining about the numbers I got seeing I had a good bit of luggage in the back. the range on this thing is also pretty good. My lady's 04 cavalier had to fill up long before I did. I was just below half when she was at 1/8. ended up saving me about 30cents/gallon because she had to get fuel at 3.78 and I didn't get low till the stores were selling at 3.45/gal.

I ran 890 miles last week (mixed miles) and only got about 15.5. Put a trailer behind it yesterday with my riding mower in it, ran 175 miles and it got about 12. Towed nicely though. Gave it an OC this morning, will check mpg again this week with another 350+ miler to Augusta and back. Coils and plugs to come soon and I hope that helps out some. Seems like ^^^^^ IMINYOURCHAIR's 4.6 gets significantly better mpg. Good comparison.

Yeah, she is doing well it seems. Just filled up for this week of work and it got 16.7. that's with about 30 miles before Atlanta to home and then some mixed driving. It seems I've got the engine straight, now I need an alignment. noticing some abnormal wear on front tires.
