need some help!!

My 98 xlt is making a ticking or purring noise when I try to accelerate. Not only is it making that wierd noise it is also having major acceleration issues. Sometimes I can go on the freeway but other times it won't go over 20mph. I have little money and I don't know much about cars. Anyone else ever have this problem, what did you do? Thanks for any ideas you can come up with!

No codes, well tons of codes actually. The car was just given to me by my boyfriends cousin and whoever had the car before her took the catalytic converter off. That's on my list next to fix. But I heard that the codes are wrong in this case without that part....

First, your CAT isnt a issue, I would have suggested that was the problem, but since its removed, not likely..

First get your codes all of them and post them here, we than can go through each one for you..
