we recently bought a 2001 expedition eb with 63000 on it. It has the 5.4l engine, 4x4. Within the first day i had it the trans went out and had to be rebuilt, fortunately it was covered under the warranty… we just took a 600 mile trip to the outer banks from maryland and used the a/c consistently for the first time. it works great unless the motor is working a little harder than usual, such as passing vehicles or going up hills… and when it is working harder the a/c stops coming from the vents and comes out of the defroster. is this normal or is there something wrong?

Definitely a vacuum leak in a line to the vents. I had an old Dodge do the same when the lines began to rot. Increased load from the engine puts more pressure in the line than it can contain.
