No actuators on the front axle ?

Hi folks!
I am just wondering how the front axle work, it doesnt have any type of actuators on it.
During front brakes replacement I noticed that front wheel spins free, like it was didconnected from the differential. Is there some sort of autolock hubs inside of carrier?
The vehicle is 2000 Ford Expedition XLT 4.6 vin 6.

Ford has used a couple of different systems over the years. The early models had a center axle disconnect system. Then they used IWE (integrated wheel ends) that were essentially just vacuum operated locking hubs. The AWD trucks don't have any of these systems.

We need to know more about your truck in order to help you out.

What does the dash switch say? (awd, 4hi, 4lo, 2wd)
Does the system seem to be working ok?

The switch positions are: a4WD, 4HI, 4LOW.
System seems to be working OK, I turned switch to 4HI and tried to make a tight turn on the dry parking lot, and wheels wind up. Also I tried to spin the wheels on the icy road, and I can realy feel how the front axle engaged.

This is how I believe it breaks down by model years (4wd)...

97-98 have center axle disconnect.
99-02 have neither center axle disconnect or IWE's. (No 2wd selection)
03- ? Began using IWE's
