This may get long and complicated. I poked around and didn't see anything here that seemed to match my predicament.

Wife and kids took the Expedition from VA to TX last month for an extended visit of friends and family. On the way there, had one episode of it dying on the Interstate when she attempted to accelerate around another vehicle. Did a restart no problem, took it to AutoZone. They found no problems, had her put some fuel treatment in it. Problem thought solved until I flew in and started the drive home. Meanwhile...

While she is there in TX, it starts running rough at idle, idling to stall. I wasted a couple hundred $ on MAF cleaner, fuel filter, MAF, air filter (OK wasted $ is a relative term since it needed some of these but I was running on a limited budget at that point; I wasn't thrilled that the MAF was in there for 30 seconds, in the parking lot of AutoZone but they wouldn't take it back), and finally took it to a shop. Turned out it was some sort of vacuum line. I didn't get the particulars since wife went to pick it up.

All was well again until we start home. I try to accelerate going up an on ramp to I-35 and lose all power to tires and cab but does not stall. I let off the accelerator, noting the odometer, compass and temp screen is showing "888888888888." A couple seconds later power returns and off we go. Had this happen a couple other times til I got used to being easy with the foot. Wife noted that the symptoms started at 3000 RPM. I also noted that the AC, which to this point has never failed me, began having issues. It didn't seem to be as cold when I got there, which I attributed to the TX summer, but now when set on MAX AC and high fan, the fan speed varies as does the temperature of the air. It was definitely impaired right after the near-stalls. This sometimes seems random but other times varies with the positioning of the windows up v down.

It sounds to me like there's a major power wire that's loose, and when you accelerate the G-force pulls on the wire just enough to break the contact. I had that problem with the coil wire on my Grand Am a looong time ago.

I've also heard of some fuse that's known for corroding or melting, I think it's under the hood. Possibly this is related to that.

How's the obvious things like battery cables? Not just the battery end, what about the other end of the cables like the alternator and the grounds?

"I have the problem you stated, the odometer, compass and temp screen is showing "888888888888." Mine is not intermittent and has been constant for about six months.

Any Ideas?
