Oil Monitor Questions

I have a 2011 Expeditionn with the 5.7. While on a road trip the CHANGE OIL SOON message came on at 15k miles and I was set to change the oil at 16k. Does the oil monitor actually monitor the oil OR is it just a device that monitors the miles since the last change. ALso, the owners manual says to change the oil every 7500 miles. I use the standard Motor Craft oil 5/20. How often are you guys changing oil with regular driving??

the change oil soon just goes by the mileage. I change my oil at 5000 miles and your expedition has a 5.4 engine
