Oil pressure gauge acting up

when our 2000 XLT Sport is cold and starts up oil pressure light comes on and gauge drops to zero. Am I just wishfully thinking that it is a oil pressure sender problem? What to check first?

I'm sure you have found out it was the sending unit i had the same problem on 2001 EB Expedition.Just replaced and checked oil pressure their is a TSB to trim drip pan on some it makes contact with the unit ..........oh part about 10 bucks
