I'm posting this here because the last thing I want to do is to make anyone feel badly about THEIR new truck. I am kind of shocked that people are apparently paying nearly twenty grand and even more for "the updates". Effectively, if you balance the cost of a '17 v the '18, you are only seeing the difference for the "upgrades" or the things that are different & better such as the next-gen 3.5 or the 10spd BUT TWENTY GRAND? In other words, nearly half-again of what my dead cost was?

I'm basing this off my otd price of 54K(incl almost 3K in state taxes) & change for my '17 Lmt 4wd(purch 11/16) with everything cept the electronic damping and rear dvd players......

I understand about new models.....supply & demand...but still.....am I the only one struck by this?

Again, this is just a math question to me and I'm in no way trying to make anyone feel they need to justify their decisions. I do not pretend to know what YOU should do with YOUR money!

I drove a 17 rental after my previous vehicle was totaled. We loved it, but when it can time to buy we went with a 2016. Similar trim/options. Both XLT with one of the option groups. Compared to a 2018 I paid less than half. Do I like the 2018s? Yes but I couldn’t justify paying that much.

EDIT: I had a funny conversation with the neighbor. Rental and mine are both ingot silver. Neighbor commented on length of rental and wanted to know why my insurance covered so long.

Although my experience in the past has been to never buy Rev. A. With a new generation of computer or vehicle I would wait for the second revision to the line. So I will be looking for a 2019 in late 2020/2021 and plan to keep mine until then.

I wanted an ecoboost Expedition. So that’s why I bought a ‘15. To me, there isn’t much difference between a ‘15 and a ‘17 aside from Sync revisions...but there’s a definite price difference. I’m not interested in the new gen expedition. I think the 3rd gen are the most beastly trucks in the lineup. I’m thrilled with mine so far.

I will second Muddy Bean, an up to 8 passenger SUV should be just that, large and aggressive yet still stylish without over doing it.

IMO the 4th gen looks inferior to its sister 3rd gen when side by side. The total redesign really turned me away from ever purchasing anything newer than a 2017 aside from the few updates in the 2018 most notably the 10spd port and DI 3.5L. They went from full size SUV in 3rd gen to flashy bling bling “I want to be a suburban” in 2018. Unless the new style really entices you, I see no reason to upgrade from a newer 3rd gen to a 4th, especially when you look at price and what your paying for

Fords pricing has gotten out of control. They are to the point of pushing away their big spenders along with all of us. I lost interest in any expedition beyond the 2014 MY when they added the ecoboost powertrain, it’s not for me. Expedition sales have been very low when compared to the 2nd gen and early 3rd gen models. 2018 sales aren’t even close and it’s mostly due to the pricing being too high.

I looked at them and decided just keep mine..not a fan of the DI 3.5...I don't like the way they combine port injection and direct injection...they way its programmed currently the PI delivers 5% to 10% of your fuel...so your only seeing the advantages of DI at higher RPMs....but what do I know...I am still mad they quit selling the Excursion with the 7.3...lol

Thanks for responding, I didn't want to put anyone on the spot. Maybe I framed my thoughts incorrectly. I understand that many prefer the earlier version and I get that, I personally agree(considering my investment) but that wasn't what I was asking. My question- are the upgrades/improvements worth the 20K delta? To me, that's real money.

Jeff, just about anyone paying $80K for a truck is making an emotional decision. There's no financial plus to that type of spending. Ford obviously sees a market among those type of folks and is capitalizing on the present financial bubble. They know their market and their timing is spot on. I give them lots of credit.

For a person who has that kind of money to sink into a quickly depreciating asset, go for it. For me, I'd put that money in a rental property that will completely pay for my five year old car, give me a return for the rest of my life and send my kids to college. I've done that with my cash and haven't worked in a decade.

Ford doesn't mention the huge surge in XLT, and even SSV sales. Those people who need trucks but think with their wallets instead of their hearts, the business folks, are paying only 60% of what the power-rear-seat crowd is spending.

I agree with your sentiment overall though. I see a 2017 as a much better value than the new one. My answer is no, I don’t think the 18’ is worth the 20k more.

The MSRP on my 2008 with every option box checked was just over 52K. 10 years ago.

The MSRP on a fully loaded Plat 4x4 EL 2017 was what, 73K? Holy smokes thats a 40% price increase over my '08. Justify that because I cant.

The MSRP on a fully loaded Plat 4X4 MAX 2018 is what, 85K? Thats just 16% more than the most comparable 2017.

I bought mine last June and had the exact discussion in my head about the additional 20k. I love shiny, new things, but I couldn't get over the add'l cost to get the '18. I would have loved the 2nd generation engine and 10 speed along with 360 camera, and actually pivoting backup guide lines. It came down to the '17 doing everything I needed, while the '18 had some add'l toys I would have liked. The extra 20k was supposed to let me buy a camper (but the wife changed her mind). I love my '17 and hope everybody loves whatever they have .

Just bought a used rental 17 EL XLT with 26,000 miles on it for a steep discount over leftover new 17's on the lot. So paying even more for an 18? No thanks but if you have the income to afford it and it's what you want, that's cool too.

Can I be your contrarian? For background, I've got a 2018 FX4 Max on order while my twin brother just replaced his wife's 2003 Limited with a lightly used 2017 SWB 4x2 Limited. I'll be in for about $30k more than him. Why'd we choose differently? Is there any one feature on the 2018s that's worth the $30k premium*? No. But there's a bunch of stuff that's worth a little bit more and which really would be nice to have. Add them all up and are they worth $30k? Depends on whether or not you have the $30k.

Or put another way, you can save $30k, but what do you have to give up? Locking rear differential, 2" of ground clearance, skid plates, 10speed transmission (we have a 6000lb GVWR travel trailer), 50 ft-lbs of torque, panoramic sunroof, tip and slide seats*, auto-cruise control with stop and start, transmission temperature monitor, terrain control system from the raptor, a nicer interior, a truck that doesn't already look dated (even if it doesn't look as "tough"), etc, etc.

Sure some of that can be remedied via aftermarket parts, but then you've got to source them and find time to install them (or pay even more money to have them installed) and maybe you just voided the warranty with that lift and, and, and, well, now you didn't really save the full $30k, you put yourself through a whole bunch of unnecessary hassles, and you still didn't get everything you wanted.

Additionally, we both ended up with Expeditions, but we were cross shopping very different vehicles. He was cross shopping 3rd and 4th gen Expeditions with the Armada as his dark horse candidate. I was cross shopping the Z71 Suburban**, the Yukon XL Denali and the new Discovery.

With this in mind, I strongly suspect the returning Expedition shoppers are going with the Gen 3 leftovers while the Gen 4 is poaching a bunch of people who would've otherwise

*Ok. Yes, the tip and slide seats are probably worth the $30k.
**6000lb towing capacity with the off road package? Really? And the skid plates are crap!

It's all good Shane and thanks for putting out another paradigm!

As a pure math/$ question, I had valued the adds this way....remember, there's no "right or wrong", just opinions here.

$3,000 powertrain value....remember, this is in ADDITION to the present value.
$2,500 value for ADDED tech
$3,500 value for Creature comforts (sorry but I did not value tip/slide as high<LOL>)

Total-9K delta...less discount.

Just how I wagged the values...

You are not accounting for 10 years of inflation.
Your 52k Expedition would cost about 62k today so your percentages are a bit high.

All vehicle manufacturers are upping the prices because people can “afford” it people are financing vehicles for 8+ years now which 10 years ago a 5 year term was a stretch.

I would love to be in an 18 but no way I am wanting to spend that much.
I got a 2016 for under half the original sticker price.
The 2016 has everything I need for at least 30k less than what a 2018 would cost.

We came out from the restaurant this evening and there was a 18 parked next to mine...wife said she was happy I kept ours because after looking at them side by side she said the new one looked like a XL Flex...Guess I will driving mine for a few more years....lol...I looked at them hard but for that kind price tag you can get a nice F250...not with the same creatue comforts but for me with a 250 it's easier to haul dead pigs in...Which is the main reason I didnt buy...trying to convince my self why I shouldn't just step up get a 250? Not much difference in price at that point...

We had a 2012 Ford Expedition Limited and loved it. It was totaled in a wreck. They gave us 29.000 for it. We looked at the 2018's and I did not like the new look. It looked like a huge Explorer to me. We bought a 2017 Ford Expedition Limited demo from the owners son with only 6000 miles. We save almost 15,000. Was worth it. We love the 2017.
