Exact same problem. Following
There is a thread on this forum about this issue. I had the same problem as well, it’s a warranty fix and I believe it gets replaced with a different part numbered part. My button was causing a draw on the battery as well so be aware that was causing a low voltage issue.

I found the sweet spot. The sensor seems to be right under the rear sensors. I kept swinging my leg too close to the hitch.

Well, now I know why mine doesn't work on the right side.
Apparently the manual says it does but mine never does. My sales rep said to go for the left side for the best results. I get mine to work most of the time and sometimes when I’m not trying.

I finally found the best way to get it to work with 100% success rate to open or close!

- Don't just swing your leg on the ground, lift your foot as if you are going to kick the bumper. No need to touch the bumper with your foot, but as your foot gets too close to the bumper, the sensor will see it and will open or close.

This works 100% on the left side (midway between hitch and left end of the bumper). It also works on the right side, but with lower success rate!

Hopefully it works for you. We actually live this feature and use it all the time.
