So, I got a 1998 Expedition that needs the wheel studs replaced. Turns out that since the length of the studs are longer than the clearance between the back plate and hub, I need to take off the rear differtial cap. So I did. Apparently there is a C clips and 10 mm bolt... don't see it. Can't turn the hub to find it even while it's in neutral. What do I do?

You might have a different differential than stock. If theirs no visible clip Or single bolt, it could be held in by large 3rd member gear. Rotate the gear, theirs usually something holding it in.

Ok so here's the deal. You first have to remove the 3/8 inch head bolt on side of differential. It may be a 10 mm head, you'll have to try both sockets or wrench. Use a 6 point, fits tighter. After you get bolt off, theirs a pin that you need to remove with your fingers. It goes through differential You might have to work it up and down till it comes out bottom. After that rotate axles around till c clip is facing you. Grab back part of c with needle nose pliers. Pull both off and axles should come off. Good sized hammer to pound out studs from axles. I usually use an impact and lug nut to pull in towards axle. Reverse procedure to put rear end back together. Don't forget dealer friction modifier, along with diff oil. I don't need to tell you, keep everything super clean when working in there!

That I'm not sure. If your worried about that, put pin back in, turn axles until clips is facing you, remove pin then pull both c's with needle nose pliers. Theirs a video online that shows whole thing.

Okay, so I attached a picture where the hub is hitting the part of the e brake. It pushed all the way forward but the clip won't pop. Looking st the other photo, it shows the whole where the pin is. However, If I turn it to were I can reach the pin with needle nose pliers, I couldn't push the axle in due to the wheel stud hitting the part of the e brake that the hub is currently toiching, giving me less room.

In your picture it looks like one of the studs is bent? I don't get why one of the studs is hitting e brake parts. If your axles are free, you should be able to turn it to expose c clips, do you can pull them. You might have to rock the axle back and forth to expose c clip. Looks like the axles pushed in. Try pulling it out a bit. Theirs a video online on how to remove c clips in differential on expedition that might help.

I had a thought. If you removed e brake cable, would that allow you to move axle to access c clips to pull axle. According to video I was watching you shouldn't have to but, you might have something different. Wish you were here in Daly City, could stop by. Oh well, you'll get it then say that was holding me back. Had same problems like you time and again. Always figured it out. You might need a second set of eyes to see what your missing.

Hey I'm sorry. I've been busy with work and the holidays. I got it fixed... sort of. Got the clip off and back together. Now I'm stuck in 4x4 with no lights showing that I am... new thread. Thanks KS for you help. I got the c clip out with a flat head!

How did you finally get your axles pushed in to expose c clips? Was their a brake shoe part in the way?

Sorry I'm not real good with troubleshooting 4 wheel drive problems. Seems kinda strange that you pulled rear axles and now fronts locked up. Maybe one of the other readers can chime in how to fix that problem.

There's a great blurb on how to diagnose your 4 wheel drive on this forum. You might want to read it, if you haven't already. It's the simplest way to know if your problem is mechanical or electrical. Good luck, and as always post your results to help others.

Just stopped by to say thanks. I have done studs before but never had to remove the axle from the differential. Usually the hub had clearance. Any one have experience using shorter studs that might have the clearance instead of pulling the axle?

Cheers
