My 2005 Expy recently has experienced rear wiper fail. It stopped working. Was checking fuses, and says rear washer was on same fuse...washer works.
Anyone ever replaced the rear wiper motor on an Expedition?
I know, many of you do not use it, but hey, I use and need mine.
Thanks for any information.

I know this sounds basic but make sure the rear glass is closed and locked. I've accidentally popped mine and it was closed but not locked and the wiper would not work. Once I lifted it and dropped it, everything worked fine.

The grease they used from the factory will harden up and seize the wiper shaft that goes thru the glass. Open the window and see if the arm moves freely when not engaged with the motor. If not, take the arm apart and clean then re-lube the shaft before putting it back together. If it does move freely leave the window open and turn on the wiper to see if the motor comes on while you stand back there. If it does, then the window and arm might not have been engaging. If it doesn't, then you have an electrical problem you have to trace.

On the '04 the motor will run with the glass up. Does yours?

If it does, put the PALM of your hand on the disk while it's running and apply some pressure to make sure the motor plate turns fine under load. (Be careful NOT to get your fingers in there. It's like feeding a horse.)

IF the motor doesn't run, then you've got a blown fuse or motor problem.

If all that's good with the motor, you can clean the wiper pivot if you want per the linky above (as the wiper pivot is likely dirty/worn out). You can try moving the wiper arm manually to see if it's hard to move, or if you want to be real technical, you can put a torque wrench on the wiper arm retaining bolt on the outside and see how much torque is required to turn the arm. Above a certain torque (edit: 49 in lbs, per TSB #07-10-13) it needs to be cleaned or replaced (below).

Or, replace the wiper pivot/glass latch mechanism ($60 +/-) yourself and be done with it for another 10 years.

my truck's rear wiper motor wasn't working. I swapped it with a new one; tested before I installed completely and it worked fine. After install it did not work. I gave up.

Score one more for #UAW and ****** USA craftsmanship :)

I had the same issue with my 03... took apart the shaft cleaned it up and re-greased it... Works like new

How do you gain access to the shaft to clean/lube it?

You are a better man than me. The motor is working on my '04 Expy, but the wiper/shaft needs to be cleaned and re-lubed.

I took off the wiper bolts from the inside (underside when the glass is open) hoping to be able to get to the shaft, but then couldn't figure out how to loosen everything up. I didn't want to crack the glass with too much force, so I put the bolts back on, and figured I'd wait to ask you all what's the next step once I take the bolts off on the inside.

Do I remove the wiper arm from the outside next, and/or then do something else to get access to the shaft to clean and re-lube it?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

UPDATE 10-17-15: SUCCESS! As usual with my projects, it's the first step that stumps me. I had to do some real research on how to get the wiper arm off of my '04. Turns out it was easy. Just lift up on the cover over the hub, and there's the nut holding the wiper arm. Once I got that off, the wiper arm came right off. Then one more nut, then the assembly backed out from the glass. Took the shaft/mounting plate to a vice, and with a little coaxing after taking off the c-clip and washer, I got the shaft tapped through its sleeve. Sure enough, the brass bushings were gunked up as was the white metal shaft. With a little TLC, WD-40, and then lube, it's all better. Reassembly was easy, and I even guessed the correct alignment with the glass catch first time. Everything works like new. Thanks everybody for your help & instructions. :favorites37:

Thank you for this heads up. This lead me directly to the issue with the rear wiper on our new to us, everything worked 2006 EB Edtn.... until the rear wiper stopped dead at the 12 o'clock position. 1st round is on me!!
