removing cats

2002 5.4......just wondering if i can remove 2 of the cats without the check engine light coming on...

I just removed the 2 rear converters on mine yesterday and i didnt get a CEL light.

i think i will try it this weekend... i will cut them in a way if something happens i can put them back on

I had mine done, by a local muffler shop. cause i looked at them and thought it would be a pain to cut them out and put a piece of pipe in.

Maybe, because if you buy an aftermarket setup it usually is just one cat per side.

in cali? no. the laws are so strict here that if you remove 1 cat it wont pass. what came from the factory must be there during smog. so no headers no removal of cats and no straight pipes. so manifolds, all 4 cats, and a muffler, but the law states that there cant be aftermarket cats and mufflers. so you can do that. but manifold must stay. unless you know a good smog shop that will still pass you. i wish mine was like that. i was thinking of straight piping mine then putting the muffler on for smog then back off.

with my k&n fipk and my exhaust it still passes smog with flying colors. even though k&n site says series 77 not legal for cali. but mine came with a c.a.r.b sticker.

i ran my mustang on the road like that then switched back to the stock for emissions. took 2 flanges welded them to a straight pipe and same on the cat. then took 2 more and welded them to the existing pipes. took about 30 minutes to change out under the stang. now the car is fully roll caged up with open headers and the guys at the emissions shop by me dont even have me run through there. they just pass me with a waiver and i throw them 20 bucks lol
