I wouldn't weld it. The welds can break, or the diff could give too, then your rear end is shot. When welding the gears, you lose your differential and have posi. When you go around corners, your wheels will spin at the same speed no matter what, and this will also eat up your tires. It would be ok if it was an all off road rig, but with lots of highway miles, you wouldn't like it.

I'm planning on going with a detroit sometime, but that will be after an engine rebuild and 9.75 rear end.

why get the 9.75 if your gonna upgrade? do the 9" or go with a d60. more options and what not.

I would not recommend welding them, as you take a turn, the inner wheel will want to spin as fast as the outer and with big tires, it's going to be a big mess if the weld doesn't hold...

yup dont weld... cheap alternative is find a rear end with the factory limited slip and swap them out.... or save up for a real locker... my old 97 f150 had a detriot lock-right with 4.88s in the 8.8 rear turning the 38x15.5s all with the 4.6...

I would never weld the spiders which is basically a poor mans spool just for safety reasons alone with a street driven vehicle. Would make handling a nightmare and near impossible in the rain. It would always tend to oversteer as you are forcing the inside wheel to spin. On dry pavement eventually an axle or the differential would break as this puts tremendous stress on them.

By the way the factory limited slip thats in mine is very tight and performs very well. It is constantly trying to scrub...or spin the inside wheel while turning. I think you would be happy if you can locate one.
