I have a 1997 Eddie Bauer. Everything is still running great except that the stereo has decided to stop working. No sound is coming through the speakers but the headphone jack still works. Before the speakers completely quit working the display always showed the headphone icon. Also before the speakers completely stopped working the sound would cut out occasionally, the louder the volume was up the more it would cut out. Anything would help as I'm not sure where to start.
Thanks!

Now I've decided that I'm going to replace the stereo head but can't seem to find a replacement anywhere. The part number is F65F-19B165-BD. Any help would be great!

Will my stock wiring be fine to just plug into the new head unit? Also I can't get seem to disconnect the speaker wires from the stock head unit. I thought that I would be able to just push the latch in and pull it out. Will I need to cut these wires? Thanks

stillrunning, I do car stereo installs on the side. First off, any aftermarket head unit is going to be tons better than a factory unit. Besides, they tend to be cheaper too.

As for new speakers, that is a yes and no answer. Do you need speakers? No, not really assuming that the factory ones have not been blow. But, at the same time, the factory speakers are a very little wattage speaker. So, if you get a new head unit with a high power amp (normally they are 50x4), the need for new speakers will be necessary. Along those same lines, those speakers are 15 years old and like anything else with time, they wear out and bigger and better models are released. So, going with new speakers (even if they are 6.5" speakers) will improve the sound you are getting by themselves.

Another thing that I will recommend, especially if you are looking at getting a higher wattage unit is to upgrade the wiring between the head unit and the speakers to something aftermarket. The factory wiring is barely adequate for the low power of the factory system. Also, on your 97, there is an integrated amp in the truck. While you can use an aftermarket head unit through it, the sound quality of that unit is not going to be near what a new unit is going to be.

If you need any additional assistance, let me know. I had karaoke in my Expy for awhile. So, to say I had a "nice" system is probably an understatement.

Just found out that the problem is with the amp that is for the speakers. I think at this point I'm going to just replace the speakers, amp and sub. Any suggestions as to which I should go with to keep from spending a fortune but still getting a quality project. Also what size of speakers can I go with?

Going to have to disagree on most of that, I have 15 years and still work with systems M -S,

First if your factory works fine and your happy with it dont touch it, yes newer speakers will sound better, but again you're call. and the one I love is upgrading the the wiring between HU and speakers I have only once have done that and the guy thought he was going to save money buy bypassing the factory amp and still cost him them same as the adapter and does not give you any extra sound quality. I will agree that it is nicer to use the better wiring but unless you have a $5000 system stock is fine. It comes back to this. "If its not broke and you are happy with it dont fix"

That and I was trying to help the guy without him spending hundreds of dollars

Just shop around if you are in a hurry wal-mart, Radioshack, etc they have the stuff in stock, but if you want better equipment go to that URL I posted before plus they are cheaper than a store. Http://www.OnlineCarStereo.com or check your local craigslist, Craigslist is where I got my entire system and I paid $400+ everything but the subs were new never opened

Front and Rear are 6x8

I went ahead and bought a new JVC head unit, 4 JVC 6x8 speakers and a bazooka tube sub. Now I just need to install everything but I don't want to pay 300+ for geek squad or some other installation. I plan on bypassing the stock amp and wiring the head unit directly to the speakers. I'm not sure on how to do this wiring if i can just modify the current wiring or if i will need to completely rewire. Also I'm not sure exactly how to install the sub. Once again thank you!

Seriously dont attempt this if you are not fully sure how.

1st I would keep the amp, you will degrade what sound you do have, even with new speakers. But if you are extremely hell bent, becareful if you are doing it yourself.

2nd Some small shops will do it for cheaper 50 to 70 bucks, but again more of a mess for you to fix later if something messes up down the road.

3rd Highly recommend getting a new 60 buck amp and 20 dollar harness.. That way everything is plug and play.. basicly unplug and plug in..

i was quoted 300-350 to redo the wiring in my truck. it took me about 4 hours to do it over 2 days. i used some old speaker wire i had and wired it to my deck. its my jvc deck. also the sound is so much better. the stock amp is a POS. i can play my music at max and its clear as day. bass - 0 mids - 5 highs - 6. thats with 4 5x7 kenwoods. its not hard to do. just take your time and run new wires.

My JVC is 4x50, will this be enough power or will an amp be absolutely necessary? Do you have an amp for the speakers? If so, what kind is it?
Thanks

I run a kicker component so for me a amp is a must I run a 750watt for all of mine... You will get a better sound quality if you get amp, but thats your call..

But a cheap 300 to 500 amp will cost 60 to 80 bucks unless you go high dollar comp amp. which you dont need, and that bass tube will probably do nothing, I had a set of 10" Sony Explodes 1100w apiece and it was a waste of time for the previous owner to put them in to much air space

I got a an amp for the speakers and now I'm in the process of taking out the old speaker amp but I'm not sure where it is exactly located and how to get to it. I know that it is somewhere under the center console/dash but not sure how to get there. Any help would be great.
