I know on most high end home stereo, like McIntosh, and Krell just to name 2, use both RCA unbalanced and Xlr balanced connections. Some swear that the balanced are better, but with high quality RCA cables they actually sound better. Car stereo may be different, but as Edizzle said, they should be an unbalanced connection. To my knowledge nobody uses a Xlr connection in car stereo. Alpine used to back in the 80's with a 8 wire din plug that was horrible. I had a 60 watt per channel Alpine amp that would distort at way too low a volume level, due to the tiny 24-26 gauge wire. I converted over to RCA connection, and doubled my volume, with no distortion.

Ya I know what he is talking about and if we were setting up a garage band PA then that knowledge would come into play, but I thought this thread was about car audio.
If you have a stock head unit the signal that goes to the stock amp is unbalanced.
If you have a aftermarket head unit the signal that goes to the amp is balanced.
All aftermarket amps accept the balanced signal. (at the RCA input)
Only a few top end aftermarket amps accept the unbalanced signal. (at the RCA input)

So car audio is the opposite of home. Do you know why? Is it because 12 volts vs 120?

you are 100% incorrect!!! The RCA cable itself as a transport for audio is an unbalanced connection, period. Look up RCA connector. There is no balanced RCA.

And where in any of my post on this thread do you see Connection or connector or period for that matter?

Dude! LOL. RCA is a connection, the only thing you can talk about RCA IS the connector/connection.

"All aftermarket amps accept the balanced signal. (at the RCA input)" that is an RCA connection!!!
"Only a few top end aftermarket amps accept the unbalanced signal." (at the RCA input)" that is an RC connection!!!

why can no one on here admit when they are wrong!!! insane. its ok to admit it, i do it once every year or two!

Not opposite, it is the same.
What is the third wire in a XLR cable? Ground. So on car audio your vehicle is the third wire. (that is why you don't see XLR in car audio)
So can you get a balanced signal thru RCA input? Why yes, yes you can in a car.

Going to the store to get some Midol for someone who has a 100% incorrect period problem. You need anything Moose?

You are talking about Differential Balanced Inputs. Learn your terms if you are going to discuss with folks. This is not the same as a balanced audio input.

Also, you have it backwards!!

Bottom line here fellas, is it plays when you plug in RCA's and get the hots, ground, and speaker connection right. I've never got too technical about Stereo hookups, I usually did car stereo just for myself, occasionally for a friend. Too many weird setups, and if you don't know, you end up frying something, and payng out of your pocket for doing a favor. Most if not all my installations involved pre amp only head units, 2-3 amps, and an electronic crossover. I always ran separate new wires for door and rear sub speakers, as well as power and ground, the only one I tapped into was the antenna turn on. I never once in over 10 cars installing a new stereo, had a problem. Rca cords only came to mind if they were too short. Up untill about 15 years ago, I didn't know what unbalanced cable meant. Yupster, since your going to the store, grab me a sixer of Corona's and a couple of limes. I'll need them to wash down the Bayer aspirin needed from this post!

Differential Balanced Inputs is A balanced signal running thru a RCA imput with a common(the vehicle) ground. Bottom line you can have a balance signal thru a RCA input if everything is on a common ground. You said that was not possible and it is.

You 2 need a hobby! Way too much time on your hands. We've got more type A personalities here short of a Hells Angels meeting at their clubhouse.

I added a Rockford Fosgate P300-12 Punch 300 Watt Powered Loaded 12-Inch Subwoofer Enclosure to my 2017 Expy. Ran a 6 gauge wire from the battery to the amp. Took hi-level sound from pass door speaker and found a switched wire in the floorboard wiring harness.

It has an adjustable knob so I can adjust the bass. This unit will shake everything in your truck if you want.
I'm trying to upgrade my sub and amp can u help pls
