Why does ford engines just make loud ticking noises. I have heard that its like a ford thing. I am not worried about it cuz i am told if a ford doesnt tick, it isnt working. Anyone know why ford love to make this noise?

i've noticed that sound as well on my Expy as well as on other Expys!

On the 4-valve motors (Navis) the ticking is all those beautiful valves, cams and chains doing their thing. On the 2-valves, unfortunately, it usually means a broken stud at the exhaust manifold causing a small leak.

I have a slight rod knock in mine that happens in the MN cold. I hear that it is something to do with the followers wearing over time. After it warms up it goes away. It's been doing it since I can remember (started paying attention to the family vehicles about 4 years ago) and does not seem to affect the performance at all. And i drive like it was stolen haha

I have heard that some ford engines suffer from what is referred to as "piston slap", which is basically a design flaw.

You know, i do have a broken stud or two. That is prob the reason why its so loud lol. Maybe its time for headers.

It really depends on which engine you're talking about ....

2V's make certain "normal" noises whereas 3V's ticking sometime indicate problems ....

Check the studs that attach the cat to the manifold. I had a bad exhaust leak that was caused by the cat not being held flush to the manifold any longer. 90 bucks later it was fixed and running like new. My other side is now doing the same thing though, so I am going to take it back when I have the time.

i would just redo the exhaust but i am waiting it out until i dont have to do emissions anymore.

I did a full PI head swap including BBK headers and still get a small tick/ tap from the passenger side. I am running the 2V Romeo setup. Nothing is wrong with the block and there is also all a brand new timing kit that was done. I know that on the 302 (5.0) setup you get quite a bit of upper valve tick of which you can mainly hear under the hood but not much outside when the hood is closed. On my Expy I find more noise through the fender well and not much under the hood. I was able to trace back my noise to echoing through the headers and carried into the stock cats on the passenger side. One other thing is typically you will find a bit more noise echoing with headers.

What about the rocker arms ? If loose will that cause a ticking sound ?
