What is a thermostat exactly? I know it controls how hot the engine runs, but whats the benefit between running a cooler thermostat vs stock? Does it have something to do with emissions? If running a cooler one than stock is better, why didn't they set it lower at the factory?

Bhsoulja mentioned to me that he got a 190 degree one and it peaked my intrest.

the thermostat controls the coolant flow from the engine to the radiator with...

the idea is with electronic engines is the lower temp will T-stat will cause the engine to advance the timing to get the engine up to optimum operating temp in cause making a little more power

thats like saying...if adding duals and cai will increase HP and increase MPGs...why dont they do it from the factory...the government dictates the maximum they are allowed to make for vehicles...knowing...the companies can produce faster higher HP vehicles...the MAN is keeping it down...but that makes room for someone to do what they do to make a product to maximize the "potential" that can be gained...so to comply with the standards of the GOV...we get the vehicles we have today...

this is weird. i was thinking about a 180 stat. but now that i know how it works i dont want it. my truck has more power and i can burn rubber when shes cold, but when shes at op temp she lags on power. im not saying shes slow. im just saying my 0-60 is slower. how could that be?

Your underhood temps are much higher after the engine has warmed up. Just like on a cool (think 40 degrees) morning you can feel some extra pull. It is because cold air is more dense than warm air so more air is forced into the cylinders creates more hp (better volumetric efficiency). That is why most people see a decrease in fuel mileage during cold months.
