My ‘05 4WD XLT is presently throwing a P0012, P1250 and occasionally random misfires. She’s burning about 1qt of 5w30 full synthetic per fill-up, shifting in and out of overdrive on the highway and making grinding noises while accelerating and turning from a stop. I bought it new in September’05 and have put 172,800 miles on it. I did the timing job myself at about 100,000 with all Ford parts, except the oil pump and timing chain. I did the Melling high flow/pressure pump and unfortunately, a Cloyes timing chain: because Ford was back-ordered where I lived then.
At nearly 173k, with the codes and oil consumption (no external leaks), I’m shopping a remanufactured engine. Because I’ve pulled a (possibly overloaded 8900# trailer occasionally) I’m also looking at a remanufactured transmission and differential.

I have been under it with a technician and service writer to see if rust has eaten up the frame or body: it hasn’t. I’ve been reading posts here about different vendors for remans and have quotes from the three prevalent ones. They all claim the same improvements to early designs and warranties for their products.

Because I know the history of this expy and the “bones” appear to be in good condition. I’m willing to do the deed: $20k to $25k to keep it on the road. My biggest issue is, what if I’m involved in an accident that would total it? Insurance would probably pay about $2500, if I’m lucky.

If I replaced this with another SUV, capable of towing the 8900# trailer with the $25k I’m planning to spend, insurance would pay for its loss. If I spend that $25k on another SUV, for that price, it would be used; therefore, a possible problem that someone else got rid of, or in need of a timing job in the near future.

Is there an insurance company or policy available that would cover the loss (even if depreciated by mileage) for the expenses of this engine , transmission, and differential replacement to this expy on the road?

Maybe that's why my neighbor has 3 Toyota's, LOL. 1 to drive and 2 to fix, it takes so dang long to fix them. My goodness is everything difficult and expensive compared to my Ford's and Chevy's. He and I go back and forth at each other jokingly all the time.

Anyway, I know there are insurance policies available that will let you decide the value, you'll pay for the premiums accordingly though. Might be worth calling your insurance company and even a local insurance broker and ask about it.

My Expedition is still running, but I often think about what I will do when the time to comes for lengthy repairs or replacement. I despise everything knew that's out there, I can't use touch screens without a stylus and I would never pay the prices now days anyway.

At 20 to 25k for repairs, i think i would be inclined to buy something newer.
