Yesterday on a long, steep climb while towing our transmission got close to overheating (118 Degrees C).

So I thought I should pay some attention to the coolant. I believe the attached picture is the coolant and it’s at the minimum level.

What do you recommend to use for topping it up?

The manual should say. Or grab a job at ford. For no reason would I use a universal coolant from the parts store other than to get home in a pinch.

Owners Manual specifies fluids to be used

Why do you think 118C is too hot?

Adding coolant won't make tranny fluid cooler?

Minimum level is just that, OK?

Was it your rad overheating or transmission? I had the coolant lines to the transmission changed out twice for leaks. It would NOT show up on the ground so I had no idea. Maybe this is your situation?

Unless the bottle is far below the MIN level when checking AT THE PROPER TIME then I wouldn't add anything. I also agree, to get the correct coolants from FORD. I have noticed depending on your MY that it could be different colors.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. The transmission monitor was showing very near the red line, which appears to be 120C.

But it’s true that the minimum should still be fine. I haven’t had any issues on subsequent tows when I took it slower. I’ll continue to monitor and check with Ford if I need any more help.
