Transmission lag

My 1999 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer with the 5.4 16 valve motor has a lag between reverse and forward when not completely warmed up, Is this a problem that need to be attended to, or is this normal?

To check level
with a warm running truck parked on a level surface pull the dipstick to check level
add trans fluid if nessary
