I have a 2000 XLT that has started hesitating sometimes when you try to drive off. I can't tell if it's the motor that's hesitating or the transmission. It also makes an odd sound according to my wife (it's her daily driver). I can't get it to do it when I drive it and I don't drive it that often. I do notice when driving, sometimes it sounds like the front wheels are trying to engage (4WD), especially when accelerating or going up a hill. It has about 127k miles. A local mechanic that does not work on transmissions told me he has heard of these models having trouble with the mechanism that engages/disengages the 4WD and that that could be the culprit. I'm a shadetree mechanic with not a lot of technical knowledge, but was wondering if anyone has had similar problems and what the fix would be.

Also, glad I found this blog, this Exp gets terrible gas mileage and I have the same oil problem - 1 qt every 1000 miles with no obvious signs on the driveway, motor or out the tailpipe. Who knew Ford considered this normal?!? Now I guess I do!
