Pleasd help... I have to decide what to do in morning. I'm 2,000 km from home. 2015 expedition started "bucking".... a thump and bump, felt like transmission jumping out of gear and back in on interstate at speed. Did it about 4 times in as many miles. I pulled into Omaha NE and got a room. Need to decide what to do as I'm on vacation. I could leave it, rent a car and come back in a week or two, or??? I've been driving it around for a while and it seems fine now in the city. Maybe only when it's real hot on the interstate for several hours.? Anyone had similar??

Swing by an auto parts store and have it scanned for codes. It could be a misfire, I would try to rule that out first. Like you said if its happening on the interstate it could be the trans heating up. If you have the ability I would check the transmission fluid level, its under the vehicle on the passenger side next to the catalytic converter. If you don't have the ability to do it I would have a shop check the fluid level before you make a decision.

No check engine light? Like another poster said, get it scanned for codes. Doesn't your 15 have the tranny oil temp reading in your gage options?

Yes. I have no codes and trans temp was ok. I serviced it about 3 months ago. I'm familiar with transmissions (used to be a tech in a transmission shop) but not specifically the 6r80, other than service. I'm at a shop now having it evaluated.

I think there is an ABS issue that causes what you described. Users describe a momentary lockup at highway speeds. Oh wait, that was a GM issue affecting millions of pickups and corvettes. Sorry.....

Maybe too late now, but as of a few years ago there was a great mechanic in Omaha called Young Man Kim’s.

My 2016 had symptoms that sound similar to yours. I finally figured out that it was the brake switch at the pedal. No codes or CEL made it a pain to diagnose! The computer thought the brake and accelerator pedals were both being pressed. The part was less than $100, but the installation was a real pain for my back. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

UPDATE:
First, thanks for all the suggestions.

We are back home now after over 7,000 km. We couldn't replicate the problem, but knew it was something more than just a shudder or misfire. It would momentarily stop, but before I could pull over, it would go again. It is high mileage (300) and has never had work done to it, and not wanting to be stranded, I took the plunge and had a new transmission installed. We were at what seemed to be a very competent shop and they agreed to do it immediately because we were traveling. Trans temps were mid 90s C before and the new one runs 40s and 50s C. Very costly, but buying/selling/trading/renting weren't reasonable options for us at the time, being out of country.

HOWEVER.... after all this, the problem recurred a few hours down the road. This time it triggered a code for fuel pump issues. My wife googled the code as I pulled into a gas station for fuel. It said common in high mileage vehicles, especially when low on fuel (when the pump isn't submerged for cooling). Both instances were when it was at 1/4 or less. By this time I had refueled so we took off. Never let the tank get below 1/4 tank again and no more issues.

So, I expect to replace a fuel pump shortly, and sort of wasted $$ on transmission. However, the dramatic difference in trans temps tells me it may have been on the edge of giving trouble soon, too.

I learned to drive in the 1960's. My Father insisted that I never let my vehicle's fuel tank get below one-half full.

I continue that caveat today - and insisted my sons do the same when they began driving. When traveling, I always fill-up before the tank gets below one-half.

I have family members who will drive a vehicle until the low-fuel warning activates. Not me.

I'm glad you got home safely.
