My wife's Expedition has made a strange exhaust noise every once in a while from the time we bought it (used with 100k) but now it is worse than ever. It is not a ticking noise like a leaking manifold, rather a noise that sometimes sounds like it has an aftermarket exhaust on it. I would lean toward a bad muffler, but the sound seems more like it's coming from under the drivers side front. There is something on the exhaust down there that I think might be the EGR valve, but I'm not sure. Does anybody know what this noise is and how to fix it? It also has a distinct thud sound from the same area at start up. I have seen the compressor cause a thud but hers does it with the a/c off so I don't think that is it. If it helps, the noise got considerably worse and more frequent during/after a 1200 mile trip towing a boat.
