I picked up a Gibson catback for my EL. I was considering it for awhile, but didn't think the price was worth it. I came across a great deal today that was just too good to pass up though.

I'm happy to report that my 4x4 still works like a charm! Though I'm not gonna lie the A4WD switch is my "FUN" switch lol the 1 second or so delay from initial acceleration before the front wheels engage is fun... gets the truck a little sideways before straightening out and pulling out like a missle out of Hillary Clinton's ass (POWAAAAA)

While driving back to the cottage in -31 Celsius weather I hit a patch of black ice and instantly the rear of the truck was moving down the road faster then the front. I ended in a ditch at a 45 degree angle and had to get towed out. That’s what I did today.

I got mine back from the dealer and they told me it’s manually in 4x4 until they get it fixed Tuesday when I bring it back since it’s snowing, they said not to crank the wheel on pavement

Thanks

Need to read more about the difference between AWD and 4WD.

I was in AWD when I spun out.

I would have thought that the transfer case sensing I had lost traction would have sent power to all 4 wheels automatically.

AWD and A4WD are 2 completely different things.

The Expedition(at least 15-17) has A4WD, the dif has to engage which takes a several seconds for the front wheels to actually get power like was mentioned above.

It is not a true AWD System.

If in the Expedition you want traction to the front wheels right when you need it under Snowy conditions your are better putting it in to 4WD. Also, non of that would have helped you on ice...

All Ford Expeditions have the same 4WD system and modes from 1997-2017 it’s only changed for 2018 as they’ve dropped low range.

But let’s say when I was in the ditch I had switched to 4WD low and only one wheel had traction.

Would it have gotten all the power and allowed me to get myself out?

FYI, The 18’s have 4L. Just checked a dealer shot of the actual selector. It has 4L on the bottom right.

4L is lower Gearing in the Transfer Case. It is more torque, and better control at slower wheel speed. 4L by itself would not have been your saving grace.

The Traction control in my 17 does a real good job of using the brakes to send power to the wheels with traction.

Even with LSD in the rear and 4WD engaged, you only have 3 drive wheels, because the front is an open diff. The TCS gets around that by braking the wheel that is spinning to force power to the wheel that has grip.

I should have worded it different, 4L isn’t standard anymore it’s an option. It came with our trucks as soon as you optioned it with 4WD.

Glad you are okay, I hope your truck didn't get too banged up.

Full time 4WD is good as along as you are going in a fairly straight line, or with minor turns on slippery surfaces. If you are on dry pavement you can can tear up the transfer case when making tight turns because the outside wheel is locked and it will drag because it is turning at the same speed as the inside wheel. You'll feel it dragging. I was driving in the snow Christmas eve and I put it in 4WD all was good until cut the wheels to back into my driveway and I felt it binding so I switched it to A4WD and it stopped dragging,
