Since i soldered in a new fuel relay, we the expy has struggled to start when cold. Once started it is fine. Saturday after the gym i had declining to the dash, then no power. Since it was dark I left it there to work on today. Figured out the battery cable was loose, all power is back. Now have get it to start in the cold.

I did a baseline measurement of the battery voltage on my 2014 & 2003 5.4L
(measured at battery posts)
both batteries are about 1.5 years old - top quality - 850CCA (OEM old style, flooded)
both Expo's have been driven under various conditions over past month

I like to do this periodically, to check the health of the system … see how it changes over time … and have an idea what to expect as normal if "things go wrong".

resting (no headlights) 2003=12.4 2014=12.2
resting (headlights) 2003=11.9 2014=11.7
starting (no headlights) 2003=10.3 2014=10.1
running (no headlights) 2003=14.3 2014=14.6
running (headlights) 2003=14.2 2014=14.6

Had Goodyear install Falken Wildpeak A/T3Ws
(with new valve stems, $151) on my 2014EL
Bought from TireBuyer, free delivery to my house … $50 rebate, paid $922.17
ordered Wednesday, arrived & installed today
LT275/65R18 …. set to 45 psi (light truck tires)

The Goodyear guys let me know my rear brakes need work.
98K miles on the OEM brakes.
Apparently inside & outside pads not wearing the same rate …. baaaaaad!
Will have to restore those to new condition before the big ride.

the new rubber has steep & deep tread (20/32")
and a heavy dose of SIPING action

Mine were doing this, and it’s because the rails the rear pads sat on got rusted, so the pads locked in place. I posted pictures of it somewhere on here.

When you replace them (if you do it yourself) just sand those down and grease them up well.

2014EL with 98K miles … in the shop for the day
-Rear brakes serviced ... pads/rotors, checked, lubed etc. Nice to have brakes back to new condition and everything inspected. OEM hardware & they were still "ok". Shop said on the Expy they do wear unevenly. He almost got a hernia horsing those new Falken Wildpeaks around. Thought the tires were outstanding.
-Drain & flush cooling system. Guy said he had a hard time purging the OEM fluid. Said old fluid will still work but becomes acidic and good to replace periodically.
-New snake belt. No issue with it but seemed like a good idea. Will carry old one as spare (snowmobile style). Will also add socket for tensioner, I already carry breaker bar.

Looking at the bill, they didn't charge me for the serp belt.
I'll go back tomorrow and correct that.

Well, the work these guys do is admirable. I've bought pizza for them in the past.
It's what makes America great. Hard working, honest small business .. supporting families.
Top quality work. I'm in support of that 100%
