The other issue with 30wt on this engine is that fuel dilution can result in it being a 20wt before the next change. But it depends on drive cycle and climate. Ultimately, any SP rated full synthetic will likely make it through a 5k OCI.

If this is a concern, good reason to do oil analysis & find out.

I have. I posted my last one here. Others have shared theirs as well.

OEM recommended is the Motorcraft Semi-Syn 5W-30. Because my dealer does mine, that is what I have used in my Current Fords, and previous since 2016. No issues. I drive them hard.

If I was doing my own, I would be using Driven DT40 or Valvoline's Full Synthetic 5W-40 for any 3.5EB equipped Ford. Personal preference more than anything.

Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 5W30 is NOT the OEM recommendation for the gen4 Expedition, 2018-24.

Your dealer is screwing you over if you are getting a gen4 Expedition serviced.

Motorcraft 5W30 Synth Blend web page - Motorcraft web page for 5W30 Synth Blend - shows a “Fits These Vehicles” list and 2018-2024 Expedition is NOT on it.

Ford specifies WSS-M2C961-A1 oil spec for the Gen4 Expedition. Motorcraft Full Synthetic 5W30 meets that spec. Full Synth 5W30

Motorcraft 5W30 Synthetic Blend does not.

Nope, 100% incorrect. You will find 2 images. One is the 2020 Spec directly from the current revision of the manual, and the 2nd is the 2025 again directly from the current revision of the manual.

2020

2025
2025ExpeditionOilSPec.jpg

SP at the end of the part number is the blend, FS is the Full Synthetic. While the 25 spec lists both, the 2020 lists just the Blend. You will also notice the different spec on the 2020.

Manual is the source of truth and what matches FDRS. I can pull that up later when I get home, if you want to see proof there too. That is what the dealer goes by. The ford full synthetic, while slightly better. In independent tests the Blend does absolutely GREAT even under the recommended ~10K change recommendation.

Even the F150 PowerBoost(Hybrid) standard is the same as the 2025 Expedition, and comes factory filled with the Blend. Again, MANY PowerBoost owners have done oil analysis and it has come back that they could go longer.

I was concerned about this on my last oil change. Ran from January to August. Tons of short tripping all winter long running kids to/from school 5x a week driving a 1/3 mile round trip. 60+ idle hours, with OLM reading 24% at 4200 miles. So I changed it and sent a sample in.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30 still well within 30w viscosity, and fuel dilution was doing just fine.

Love the data! So basically the worst conditions...other than towing. You could have easily gone MUCH longer!

The only towing was very light. Under 2K lbs for ~300 miles combined which I would equate to no towing. Otherwise, I was genuinely concerned that the sample would indicate fuel dilution and or low viscosity.

Yes, I could have gone longer, but it was just convenient to change on that day. My little guys love to work on stuff. So on that nice August afternoon, we all slid under the truck together to make a 30 minute task take over an hour. Loved every minute.

Guess who makes Motorcraft oil? ConocoPhillips. Guess what other brand ConocoPhillips makes? Kendall Oil.

Kendall oil has a better additive package than MC for less cost.

I use Kendall GT 1 full synthetic 5W 30 in my 2000 Expy and I have over 250,*** miles.

Great info! Thanks for the tip. Have free oil changes at the dealer for life...so doesn't help me much. I am sure it will help others.

You're right.
I stand corrected.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

I use mostly Mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic and filter. But I'll use other brands if they are on sale.
5w-40 sounds good for my climate, especially in summer. I may try it.

2018 FX4. 165,000 miles. Penzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30 until about 100k when I switched to PUP 0w40 SRT oil. Changed every 5k with Motorcraft filter.

I spoke to my mechanic about 40w oil. He said while it may not be a bad thing, the oil ports are small on these engines and may not be able to circulate the 40w viscosity as well as 30w, creating more friction. I used 5x-20 synthetic my last change. He was skeptical about that as well claiming while it is probably fine, during harsh conditions when the engine is at its max heat, it may be better to have the 30w viscosity.
So, who really knows what's best. I'm back to following the manufacture specs of synthetic blend or full synthetic. My book shows synthetic blend, but my dealership claims they now use full synthetic.

My 2012 5.4 recommends 5W-20 semi-syn but I've been using 5W-30 since day 1. 178,000 miles later, she's running like a dream. I'm a Valvoline guy and started using their "Restore and Protect" product in both of our Expy's (2012 and 2016).

Experts are touting that oil!!!! I couldn't believe that Penzoil could make a good oil but they've got one now!
