I just bought my 97 expedition off my grandpa and i was wondering what 4x4 setting is best when offroading. I would think A4WD, and jus use the 4h and 4L if im like stuck or something. jus want to make sure so i dont mess anything up.

I usually drive around in A4wd until I start spinning, and put it in 4 hi if I know I'm going to need it, or when I start slipping a lot. I wouldn't recommend using 4 low, unless you are in a situation where you need some more power, like climbing a steep hill, or you are bogging down really bad, and need to spin your tires faster.

Welcome to the site!

The expy can do great things off road with some good tires.
A lift or leveling kit is very useful for extra clearance.

AWD is good for in town on ice and snow.

Turn it to 4H when you hit serious dirt - ie. more than washboards!

When you see a steep climb or descent coming put it in neutral and
then turn the knob to 4L. With the truck in 4L and the shifter down
to "1" you can crawl downhill without even using your brakes.

Let me know if you need more off road info!

I leave it in 2H for everyday. A4WD for snow and ice and 4H for mud and DEEP snow. I've never used 4L.

Never used 4L ???

Come on down to AZ !! :)

Plenty of exposed bedrock and steepness that require it.

Def. 4hi. You will put way more wear and tear if you have it popping in and out of 4 wheel drive when its in a4wd.
