Hi all, new here and to Expeditions. I just bought a 97 XLT with a 5.4. I have a slite miss at idol and taking off the line, I know it had new plugs and coils put in about 3000 miles or so. ( I had to do them) I'm thinking its the plugs because she bought autolites. I've been looking all over town and can't find Motorcraft SP 479 plugs. I am only finding SP 459 plugs. Has Ford changed the numbers or do I have to go to the dealership? No one in town carries them, they come up on auto zone but show unavailable. Would like to get this thing running right, my 78 Bronco is killing my bank account everytime I go to the gas station! And that just about everyone I drive by! Lol. 6 mpg. Thanks.

Just find some Platinum plugs of your choice and put those in. I used NGK's myself. Your truck is a 5.4 btw.

Ya, fixed that. Was thinking of my Dodge. Lol. I run NGKs in all my other trucks, was thinking about using them but seems like everyone else on here says to stay motorcraft.

Motorcrafts are going to be expensive. NGK's will work just fine. I run them in my supercharged Camaro as well. Trust me they will work out.

A plug is a plug is a plug. :)

Thanks to all that replyed. The Autolites were fried, went the NGK G-power, cheaper then Motorcraft and I've had great luck with them in the past. Also had to replace a COP. Got the Accel super coil, was cheaper then the rest and read a lot of good reviews on them. She runs great now! Thanks all!

I just did this an opted for the SP-479s as that was the recommended plug. Others mentioned this vehicle being fussy with plugs and I didn't want to do this job twice.

Got them from rockauto.com for $2.58ea. Amazon also has them for around $3.76ea.

my new coils came in now i need plugs but I'm having trouble selecting the right ones,

some say Motorcraft sp-459, others say sp-479,
the trouble I'm having is the 479 are hard to find (for a decent price)
so can i go with the 459's? and what is the difference between the two?

lastly some here are using the NGK G-power, this may be a silly question but are there multiple part # for the NGK's?

my searches turn up the following for the NGK's, NGK PTR6D13 and TR556P which is what?

I just want to be sure I'm using the correct plug so I don't have to re-do this job.

if anyone can guide me into the light that would be appreciated.
