The fact that you have to pump it shows it's not normal. Ford probably doesn't know what's normal so they're guessing.

Ford says that if you quickly reset the pedal on any of their vehicles, the pedal will reset about an 1" higher and will be more solid and responsive. I don't know, I haven't driven enough of them to verify this. I need to start test driving some.
I've gotten so used to quickly doubling the pedal, that it's normal motion now, specially when pulling anything. It's like turning the trailer brakes on.

I just looked at Edmunds track findings and surprisingly to me, a Supercrew F150, Expedition, Tahoe and crew-cab Silverado all pretty much brake the same. All 2015 models:

30 MPH to 0 MPH:
Tahoe 33 feet
Expedition 32 feet
F150 32 feet
Silverado 32 feet

60 MPH to 0 MPH:
Tahoe 126 feet
Expedition 126 feet
F150 129 feet
Silverado 128 feet

Not to say that one might not feel different, agreed if you are having to pump - you've got an issue.

I've driven both chevy and ford. I had a 76 K5 blazer that had over 300k miles on it when I sold it. My current expy is near 200k with no signs of stopping. If you really had two suburbans that only lasted 70k miles, then you're doing something wrong.

As to braking performance, I don't find my expedition lacking, even when pulling a 3500lb trailer (without brakes). I will admit that the pedal feel is a bit softer than other cars I've driven. It's also more linear in application. If you need to stop fast, you push harder. I don't what brakes that "put you through the windshield"

Pad material has a lot to do with brake feel, and initial bite. If you're the second owner, and haven't done breaks pads, then you have no idea what's there.
