Without baselines and measurements, however - it's unwise to assume air will be 'colder' (as in, colder than what?) no matter the source.

I've watched the intake temp on my Superchips tuner with my K&N intake. When I am moving the temp is within a couple of degrees of the ambient air temp on the dash display. When stopped it does creep up. How high it gets all depends on how long I'm stopped.

^^^^I do the same with my SCT X4. Always a couple temps above ambient when moving. Creeps up when I stop. I just did the gotts mod.

A CAI is not only about how cold the air gets it is also about how much less air restriction it provides. Less time in that stock air box the better. In any reality you will only see a possible gain of 1-3 horsepower. I am probably going to be doing the Boss 302 intake anyway so we will see what happens.

My setup just pulls air from the engine compartment. When stopped the IAT's do rise and the longer I am stopped the higher they climb. But while moving there is obviously decent airflow through the engine compartment because they drop to near ambiant as well.

If I were to fabricate a "cold air intake" that pulled air from the fender it would no doubt improve intake temps while stopped but this has not concerned me enough since it really only applies in "off throttle" situations. When I open her up the temps drop rather quickly with the increased airflow demand and the fact the vehicle is moving circulating air through the engine compartment.

Current setup:

Cold Air intake comes through the fender, just as Ford designers/engineers intended. So, even with the Gotts mod, to get any gain, and it will be minimal, you would have to set aside the grommet in the fender, enlarge that hole with a larger tube. But one thing I've learned, depending on where you live, is to put some sort of a screen mesh in this hole. In the winter, my local chipmunk population is always looking for a warm place to hang out. When I replace the air filter, I find quit a collection of achornes, seeds etc. Luckily, the way the airbox was designed, they aren't ingested into the engine.
They somehow climb on top of the front wheel, jump in the hole and travel through the tube into the airbox. Probably frightened out of it everytime I come back and start her up. Always have enough time to horde their food supply there.

once upon a time, during a cold chicago winter, my Merc Gran Marqui coughed loudly almost as soon as I turned the key to start it. it would go no further. The dealership found half the air filter ripped apart to build a nest for a squirrel. following the trail of trash into the engine, they eventually found most of the squirrel in the intake.
amazingly enough, the only part they had to replace was the air filter. lots of labor cleaning shredded air filter and pureed squirrel out of the intake, but nothing was hurt.

has any CAI, in any street application at all, ever been on a dyno, before and after? has any CAI ever measured intake temps before and after? does anyone have these results?

Yeah, and on a sadder note, many years ago a little kitten must've perched himself around the upper A arm of my '64 Olds parked under a carport when I lived in Northern California. I went out to leave, started the car and suddenly the generator light goes on and before I can open the hood, smell a whiff of animal urine. The poor little guy was probably under there looking for warmth because I was out with the car earlier. Probably panicked
when the engine started and walked right into the whirring fan or threw the belt. Severed a hind leg & skin. I called ASPCA and never knew what became of him, they probably put him down.

I think if you put the 2 or 3 Valve 5.4 on a dyno with a properly done CAI or Gotts Mod without a tune, you might see a 2 to 4 HP gain, but haven't seen anyone on this forum do that
