Exact same thing happend to me this evening. Also pulling a small trailer up a hill. Hit the Cruise OFF and immediatley went to failsafe mode. Pulled over, checked all things, nothing found, restarted and no repeat since.- mkc1962

5.4L rear main seal question
Should anyone follow this thread in the future. DO NOT buy a 4503N seal for a transfer case output shaft. ( rear main drive shaft) This is a two part seal, dust and oil. The dust is way too tight, a short amount of mileage will cause extreme heat to the rubber and the entire seal will pop out of...- mkc1962

Thanks for the input. I have found some info on the F150 forum on the topic. The parts are actually 2 separate items, the seal and the slinger. Ive done many rear main seal jobs in my day but never a 5.4L ford. Looking at a fsm I see reference to not only a rear main seal but a part called an Oil Slinger, that mates to the rear main seal. Ive tried to check the steering rack for any slack, but have not disconnected it to try that way. May give it a try next time I have it up on the lift.- mkc1962

Yes my bearings were also done, stabilizer links I used Moog and yes have pulled them more than once for inspection just to be sure. Every bolt on the entire front end has been double checked for proper torque several times. Still doing it to date. Have for the most part given up chasing this...- mkc1962

Wheel bearings on a 2006 reside within a sealed hub assembly. Have to look back and see if I posted that or not, but yes replaced the hub assembly on the side making the noise. Still to this day does it, still cant find the cause.- mkc1962

Ive seen plugs much more oil fouled than that and still not create a misfire problem. But I do see one problem AUTOLITE.
