5W20 syn-blend, is the Ford industry standard. Why are you searching for 5w30? Dexos is also syn blend, made/approved to to GM spec. Don't mess around with a new engine. Your Oil life monitor, is just a guide. Dealers hate giving the "free" oil changes. They want you to come back when other things are needed, like inspections or tire rotation. I encountered the same thing at the Lincoln dealer. I was at 6 months, with break in oil and it still wasn't ready. They actually argued with me about it. I insisted and they pulled it the back. I walked around to see into shop. I never saw them changing the oil. They told me they don't give receipts, with the free oil changes, that is was "in the computer". I think they scammed me and did nothing. I then went out and bought the oil and filter and did myself. My father had the same issue with his oil change on his Toyota. They told him, it wasn't needed. That made me wonder if special "break in" oil is used. I have been using full synthetic and change mine once a year. I own 3 vehicles and none get driven more than 4,000mi.

5w-30 is what the Ecoboost uses.

Ecoboost engines call for 5W-30 whereas modular V8s call for 5W-20, modular V8s can use either or.

And chances are if you let the dealer change it they will put in 5-20 like they did to me twice.

You don't have to use Motorcraft oil. Any 5w-30 will work. Ive used Castrol and Mobil 1 in my 17 EL

I do think the oil life monitor is somewhat intelligent. An example being just this past weekend. We went camping and brought our toy hauler loaded to the max which was probably in the 8500-9000lb range. It was 300 miles round trip. When we left the oil life was at 33% and when we returned and I got home it was at 24%. No way just normal driving for 300 miles would the monitor have dropped 9%. It knew I was pulling a load and was taxing the motor there for it adjusted. IMO that's somewhat intelligent. By the way at 33% I only had 4400 miles since my last oil change and I use full synthetic. I don't think the monitors are designed to allow you to go 7000-10000 miles before a change. I think with full synthetic 5000 is a good number to change oil at
My OLM on my Mustang counts down, while sitting in the garage. I was told it tracks time, engine revs, engine temp and trip duration. I asked the dealer, how I could be at 25% with only 1200mi on oil. They told me to ignore it and re-set it in the driver menu. It goes to 0% after 1 year. I personally believe it was put on vehicles, for warranty denial. They can track when every oil change was done and after how many miles. Ford will know, if you exceeded the "oil life" and will consider it neglect.

My 4.6l has 5w30 on the cap and the manual. I was told by dealer that a Ford TSB was issued, allowing 5w20 in engines labeled 5w30. However, I always ask for 5W30. I was given 5w20(by a Ford dealer) and it burned off almost a quart between changes. The insisted they put it in everything, with no issues. Who knows?

Why? because that is the recommended oil to use. It clearly states for my 17 to use 5w-30. The alternate oil that is recommended is FULL SYNTHETIC 5w-30. Not 5w-20. I am somewhat baffled as to why some folks are questioning my seeking 5w-30. It is the oil STATED to use.

They use 5-w30 in turbos due to fuel Dilution in the oil. Doesn’t happen as much in the N/A motors so 5-20 works just fine.
Change with syn-blend @5k or 7.5k with full syn motor craft oil. Or approved.

Most auto parts stores have way more product "in the back" than they do on the shelves. Ask. Otherwise, Amazon or order via Walmart.com.

Twice, the Ford dealer where I purchased my 2015 Expedition Limited 4x4 new, installed 5W20 oil in my engine (5W30 required). I made them change it again - although I suspect the could have put 5W20 in it again.

The service advisor said the first time that the techs were accustomed to using 5W20. The second time the advisor said there was "no way" the tech would do that - although it was listed on the invoice (customer pay).

A third time, the correct oil was used (according to the invoice) - but the tech overfilled the crankcase by two quarts. When I got home and checked the oil, I quickly discovered the overfill. I returned to the dealer and had them change it again.

I have undergone several major surgeries and I can no longer change the oil + filter myself. I am frustrated by the lack of concern by the Ford dealer techs.
