I slit the carpet down the middle for about 6 - 8 inches from the front edge to expose the duct. Then I cut across just the top of the duct a few inches back from where it joins the heat outlet. This allowed me to fold the front section of the duct under itself to make clearance for the heat nozzle to come off. That has to be muscled out after removing a couple screws. Some duct tape sealed up the duct when I was finished.
