Get the Max.
I had a 2016 Limited with standard wheelbase when I bought a 28' travel trailer with 600# tongue weight. Towing it was a white knuckled affair - very unstable and afraid to take one hand off the steering wheel for any reason. Traded for a 2018 Limited Max. The difference was night and day on stability. The Max tows great - go with the longer wheel base!

600 pound tongue was your problem. It must be 10-15% of the trailer's weight and I've yet to see a 28 foot travel trailer that weighs 4000 pounds... (600/0.15=4000.)

Your tongue weight still 600 pounds?

No white knuckles here with my 6000-ish trailer and plebeian XLT standard wheelbase but I'm running 700ish pounds on the ball.

I have 07 Expedition with 3.31 gears 2wd that did not come with the HD towing. I researched what the hd package had and found that if I upgraded the transmission cooler, radiator, and install the 7 pin trailer connector. I would have the HD towing. I found that I could even add the relay and fuse for the charge circuit. So with a weight distribution hitch I can tow my Coleman lantern with a 7200 lb weight just fine. The weight distridution hitch gives you a tounge weight of 900 lbs and max towing of 9200 lbs for 2wd and 9000lbs for 4x4 I can give you details if you still have questions.

I’ve got a 2016 EL with the HD tow package. I pull a 2023 Coachman Apex Nano. Dry weight is 3634lbs. With it empty and a weight distributing hitch I had some squat in the back.

With the weight you’re talking about it might be a good idea to consider airbags. I opted for the Sumo Springs to help out the rear end squat.

Also, like mentioned earlier I’d find out how much tongue weight you’re looking at. Give this a read as well… https://www.ford.com/towing/#suv

'21 FX4 with max towing. Equalizer 12k hitch and E rated 10 ply BFG's aired to 65 psi cold when towing. Cougar 25RDS with gross weight of 8800 lbs max. Load to 8000 max when towing. Payload of 1769 lbs on Expedition and 9200 lbs towing capacity. Hitch weight is close to 1100 lbs according to my Shurline scale. 2-30 lb propane tanks..front glass windshield and 2nd AC all add more hitch weight. Keep speed in the 60-62 mph range and it does OK. 23.5 gal fuel tank keeps us on short trips and gets 9 mpg when towing. Used son in laws F250 with the 6.7 diesel and it was perfect pulling this camper. Expedition though is heads and tails better for a daily driver in my opinion!!
