Engine control computer

Hey guy's, a friend of mine has a 2002 Expedition and a mechanic told her it was the PCM going out. Can I just get one from a wrecking yard? hopefully plug and play? or do I have to take it to the dealership to have it programmed? Now in my 1999 Expedition, that computer is in the engine compartment on the drivers side, same location on the 2002? thanks for any assistance!

expensive but is your friend sure the PCM is bad or is it other problems and a mechanic that has no idea of what he is doing
