You have to make sure to compound, polish, then wax if you buff it out. If you skip the polish that's the biggest part. When I had my Bubbling wheel well fixed recently they cut it out and replaced it then painted. They had to wet sand after to blend the paint.... after wet sanding it looked like how you describe..... pink. The only thing that brought the vibrant darker red back out was the polish, the wax just protects it and holds the color in afterward, won't add any. In fact you can't even tell the work was done...... the polish brought it from pink to factory red again. That's why I'm recommending that here because I basically had the same situation just purposefully. I've always like Meguiars not sure what they used.
