So I'm working on this expedition for my father in law. It's got this problem when you put it in reverse it moves immediately but when in drive it will sit there upwards of 40secs before it will move forward. It isn't slipping just not engaging is what if feels like at least not immediately. There was what looks like a plastic plunger laying in the transmission pan when I changed the filter. Is this a common problem? Where could have this part came from? Thanks in advance.

The plastic plug is nothing to worry about. Its a factory plug that is dropped in the tranny during assembly. As far as the tranny engaging make sure you cycle between forward and reverse several times after draining and refilling and check level. Sounds as if the fluid is not completely filled through out the tranny passages.

Did it have issue before changing fluid??

Yes it did, he said it started doing it and it was parked for about a year because of that. So I told him to start off simple and do a fluid and filter change. It also only has this slow engagement when first put in drive after in drive it has no more slow engagement until it leaves drive.

I am having my tranny "serviced" ...lol.. I will ask the expert when I speak to him next and see what he says.

I'm sure the filter is properly seated & enough fluid re-added? +1 on adequate cycling.
Any chance you also drained the torque converter too?

if these tranys are anything like the tranys in the sixth gen accords i would suspect shift solenoid. if they have shift solenoids. and yes i know accords are fwd and all that bla bla bla. but correct me if im wrong but arnt most modern computer controlled tranys similar. a little bit of googleing confirmed that these have shift solenoids most of the time will trigger a check engine light. in my accord thats how the trany first went out it caused similar issues. yes it has gone out again but thats cause the tranys in sixth gen accords are pos's. but also sounds like fluid pressure problem to me as well. i could be wrong its just where i would look.
