I've got an 05 3V 5.4 Expedition XLT with about 145K miles on it and lately it's started making a ton of what I assume to be valvetrain noise. Anyone else heard this before?

If you click on the "picture", it will take you toa video of the noise.

Check engine light on?..... Check all your ignition coils to see if any of them have blasted off. Try to move them to see if they are loose. Any other symptoms?

Don't have a 3v but the first thing I'd do is check oil level & pressure. Then go hunting with a stethoscope at idle. If the oil pump isn't pumping much for any reason you may have an expensive door stop on your hands.

Not a good idea to rev engines that obviously have mechanical problems, unless your pockets are lined with gold....

After a little research it's starting to look like the cam phaser. Which is expensive as hell too.

Good oil pressure, no misfires, good oil qty. Last oil change was with 5W30, hopefully some 5W20 and a motorcraft filter tomorrow will quiet it down some.

The noise will not go away! It only gets worse with age and mileage! Going back to 5w20 will only make the noise louder and more annoying! Use Motorcraft filter and oil or a high quality synth like mobile 1 etc... and DO NOT use a cheap filter! Use Motorcraft or anther brand with synth filter medium and anti drain back!

That is a bottom end rod knock and no matter what oil or filter you use it won't make it better. At minimum you are going to need to replace your rod bearings and have your cranked turned or just install a new crank kit. You probaly don't want to rev the engine anymore until you have that repaired.

You may be experiencing Phaser issues. The screen in the cam phasers becomes stopped up over time. 05-07 vehicles have the hardest time with this. There is also a TSB from ford with a reflash of the pcm that bumps up the idle speed to artificially create more oil pressure at low engine speed and prevent the phasers from kicking back/forth making the noise.

AND to echo what was said earlier do not run other than motorcraft filters. Or puralator on a ford. Also 5w20 is the oil you need to use.
