I read up on the materials list and decided to look at my air filter box since it didn't look quite the same. Google helped in finding someone that modified a newer Expedition by removing a "snorkel" from the air filter box.

I started the process and found out my radiator overflow bucket is a part of the air filter housing. I poked around and tried to see if I could remove the snorkel by moving both boxes out a little.

I guess my next dilemma is; does the 2011 have a real wheel well?? I see a plastic shroud around the top of the tire from the outside but I still see engine and headers. On the inside it feels like there is a rubber curtain behind the air box. Is there really no other metal on the inside of the bay?

Maybe I'll get out the digital camera this weekend and start a write up on a ram air kit with flexible tubing. Looks like there is TONS of room in front of the engine and radiator.

Do not do the gotts mod unless you have a custom tune. Doibg the gotts mod on any 05 and up expedition will cause it to run lean.

Not doubting you but the only thing the gotts really does is it allows cold air to come in from the wheel well as opposed to the hot engine air. Dont see how this can make your engine run lean. If you look at when you buy intake kits they the larger sizes recommend you get a tune bc the amount of air comming in is different.

Honestly, it does allow for a little more air to come in. Worst case, you run 91 or 93 octane gas and issue is resolved. It's not that big of a difference.

It's been proven on the f150 forums, but whatever not my truck.

When I got my 07 I pulled the snorkel out of the airbox. I ran it that way with a K&N dropin filter for 2 1/2 years. I also have the Superchips Cortex tuner. It ran fine. No errors. I just got the K&N intake so I added the CAI tune from Superchips.

I waited for the flaming to stop before fanning it some more :flame:

The Gotts mod increases the inner diameter of the filter box intake, which is already buried inside the fender.

It doesn't change the air temps as the air is still coming from the same point. Not sure about air flow increases either. The air is not being forced into the engine. The heads just have to use less effort to pull air in.

I have not seen anyone actually do a real test of the benefits of a CAI, either DIY or retail.

I could see a ram air setup as possibly leaning out the engine temporarily if not reset. I would think the MAF and ECM would compensate however?

Was typing up a big reply last night and internet went down. The article shows at the end that the Gotts mod can increase HP and torque. But replacing the whole air filter box with a CAI is a bad idea.

While thinking about obstructions in air flow... What is the flow of a stock paper filter? Everywhere I have seen is quoted at less than what the 5.4l needs.

If it stops raining long enough to pop the hood tomorrow, I may measure the filter and calculate the flow rate. Found some calculations last night also.
